  • Digital camera mode stores stills on SD or MMC cards
  • Arcsoft Editing software package included; magicVU infrared mode allows recording in near total darkness

Panasonic PVDV401 MiniDV Digital Camcorder with Built-in Digital Still Mode Overviews

The Panasonic PV-DV401 is a no-frills camcorder that’s ideal for anyone who wants a digital camcorder but doesn’t need a lot of extras. While perfectly adequate for general use, the camera didn’t overwhelm us with good design and fantastic footage. The PV-DV401 is great for a family, but not the camera of choice for digital-video hobbyists.

Digital camcorders generally do very well in brightly lit environments, and the PV-DV401 was no exception. Low-light shooting wasn’t too bad either; the picture was decent without being too grainy–a flaw of many digital camcorders. The lack of manual exposure control left much to be desired; in certain environments the auto exposure struggled between letting in too much light and letting in too little light. For nighttime shooting there is a nifty infrared mode where you shoot visible video in practically no light at all. Video playback was standard fare; however, at this price range it would be nice to include a remote control as a standard accessory. The large 3-inch LCD viewscreen is a big plus; it was very comfortable to look at during both recording and playback.

The overall design of this camcorder seems uninspired. With so many manual functions, digital effects, and settings, Panasonic could have done much better by bringing them out as buttons on the camera rather than tucking them away in hard-to-navigate onscreen menus. The jog wheel at the top of the camera performs many different camera functions, but it began to get tedious to use because of its odd placement and design. We inadvertently pressed the nearby photo button several times while trying to access the jog wheel.

Digital camcorders have been getting progressively better and cheaper the last few years. The PV-DV401 follows that trend, but has nothing to differentiate it from a crowded field. Simply put, it’s just an average camera. –Bao Tran

Pros:

  • Large LCD viewscreen
  • Infrared low-light shooting
  • Lightweight and small

Cons:

  • No manual exposure control
  • Awkward design, menu, and buttons
  • No remote

Panasonic PVDV401 MiniDV Digital Camcorder with Built-in Digital Still Mode Specifications

The PV-DV401 is a great introduction into the world of digital video. Featuring a 20x optical zoom, along with digital image stabilization (during both recording and playback), which helps eliminate those shakes and bounces common to high zoom levels, this model has everything you need to start capturing beautiful footage. You can use either the 3-inch color LCD monitor or the electronic viewfinder to frame your shots.

To help ensure that the footage you shoot will be the best it can be, the PV-DV401 has a five-mode programmed autoexposure that will adjust aperture, white balance, and other settings automatically. Also included are a number of digital effects and faders, letting you give your footage some fun, creative touches.

Still photos can be captured at a resolution of 640 x 480. Save them on either the included 8 MB Panasonic secure digital (SD) card or a MultiMediaCard. A USB port is built in for speedy transfer of your images. For those interested in video editing, the PV-DV401 has a built-in IEEE-1394 port for speedy, lossless transfer of your video and audio. Also included are analog outputs for viewing your home movies on your television, or for transfer to a VHS tape.

Panasonic PVDV203 MiniDV Compact Camcorder with 2.5″ LCD and 8MB SD card Overviews

The ultracompact Panasonic PV-DV203 MiniDV offers advanced features such as digital still photo capability and the ability to create high-quality MPEG4 video clips. The PV-DV203 features a 10x optical zoom and 2.5-inch color LCD.

Optics
The PV-DV203 offers a 680K pixel CCD providing crisp, sharp pictures. Shooting from far distances is no problem with the PV-DV203′s 10x optical zoom and 700x digital zoom. With Panasonic’s introduction of Dual D-EIS (digital electronic image stabilization), you can use this same technology in both the record and playback modes to remove additional jitter from previously recorded video.

Digital Stills and MPEG4 Video
The still mode is capable of capturing crystal-clear still images comparable to the best digital still cameras. Image quality ranges from 640 x 480 up to 1280 x 960 (through pixel interpolation). The images are stored onto the available Secure Digital (SD) memory card in JPEG format. You can also record MPEG4 video, which uses a higher compression setting and is great for posting to a Web site or e-mailing to friends and family.

Still images and MPEG4 video are stored on the included 8 MB Secure Digital (SD) memory card, and can be transferred to your PC via USB connectivity (compatible with both USB 1.1 and 2.0).

Web Cam Capability
The PV-DV203 is equipped with a built-in Web Camera that gives you the ability to send live video to family and friends over the Internet. You can even set up the PV-DV73 as a simple home monitoring or a videoconferencing tool. Microsoft Windows Messenger or Windows NetMeeting is required for both sender and receiver. Also requires Windows XP, Windows Me, Windows 98SE or Windows 2000 Professional preinstalled PC with USB port. Both computers must be equipped to make a direct dial-up connection. Driver software and USB cable are included.

More Features
The cinema mode enables you to record video in wide screen mode, giving you a 16:9 aspect ratio that’s the same as a movie screen. When played back on a television the result is dramatic looking cinema-like movies at home.

The picture-in-picture feature allows you to insert a previously taken digital still image into the video you’re recording. The still image is taken using the PhotoShot digital still feature and appears on the right side of the video you’re recording. The video and miniaturized still shot then appear together during playback

Other features include:

  • 2.5-inch tiltable LCD screen.
  • Electronic Image Stabilazation to correct camera shaking, giving you smooth and stable pictures.

Inputs and Outputs
The PV-DV203 comes with the standard DV IEEE 1394 port (also known as FireWire; Panasonic refers to this connection as iLink) for a super-fast, lossless connection to a PC or other DV machines.

MiniDV Format
MiniDV is the preferred format for .9personal and broadcast-quality video, highly regarded for its high audio and image quality. MiniDV delivers a 20 percent clearer picture than analog camcorder formats. This is all delivered on a cassette that’s 1/12th the size of a standard VHS tape. A MiniDV tape offers digital recording time of 2 full hours–20 times the capacity of a CD. You’ll also get minimal color noise interference for a more stable picture.

Size and Contents
The camcorder measures 3.5 x 2.6 x 4.9 inches and weighs 16 ounces. This package includes the PV-DV203 camcorder, 8 MB Secure Digital memory card, AC adapter, battery pack, shoulder strap, A/V cable (mini-3 RCA), serial cable, remote control, and lens cap.

Panasonic PVDV52 MiniDV Digital Camcorder w/ 2.5″ Color LCD

Panasonic PVDV52 MiniDV Digital Camcorder w/ 2.5″ Color LCD

   Brand: Panasonic

   List Price : $499.99

   Availibility : N/A

Panasonic PVDV52 MiniDV Digital Camcorder w/ 2.5″ Color LCD Feature

  • MiniDV camcorder
  • 10x optical, 700x digital, zoom with digital image stabilization
  • 2.5 inch color LCD monitor and black and white viewfinder
  • Features digital still mode
  • IEEE1394 port for easy video transfer

Panasonic PVDV52 MiniDV Digital Camcorder w/ 2.5″ Color LCD Overviews

Panasonic’s low-end MiniDV camcorder, the PV-DV52, doesn’t have all of the features of its pricier siblings–like a zoom mic or a larger LCD–but it does capture high-quality video in a light, tight package.

Although its 10x optical zoom is lower than other camcorders, it still provides a close-up image for average recording, and a hefty 700x digital zoom capability as well. The image stabilization feature of the PV-DV52 worked well, keeping our frame steady even during one-handed filming.

The PV-DV52 will capture still images as well, but only at 640 x 480 resolution. It also stores images to tape, which sometimes makes them difficult to locate in order to transfer them to PC.

Speaking of transferring, you’ll need a FireWire port to move video and stills over at high speed, as the camera doesn’t include USB connectivity. It does offer a serial connection, but that is only for transferring still images, as moving video via a serial connection would be akin to draining a lake with a stirring straw.

Some of Panasonic’s more expensive MiniDV camcorders offer a 3.5-inch LCD, but the 2.5-inch color LCD of the PV-DV52 proved large enough for average use. The PV-DV52 also offers some nice features for low-light recording (although not for no-light recording), including the MagicPix digital enhancement mode and a built-in light with a 10-foot range.

Tapes eject from the top of the PV-DV52, allowing you to keep the camera on an optional tripod when popping in a new tape. And the battery–which lasted a little over an hour–charges separately from the camera, which makes it easier to have a backup fully charged.

For the price, the Panasonic PV-DV52 allows for high-quality video recording without requiring a big investment. It’s a great starter camcorder for a family on a budget. –J. Curtis

Pros:

  • Light and compact
  • Sharp video image
  • Inexpensive

Cons:

  • No storage card for stills
  • Lower optical zoom

Panasonic PVDV52 MiniDV Digital Camcorder w/ 2.5″ Color LCD Specifications

Digital camcorders have finally reached both a level of both technological sophistication and affordability, and Panasonic’s PV-DV52 is prime example. Casual video users will be pleased with the 2.5-inch LCD screen, 10x optical zoom, digital still capability, and a built-in video light.

Lens
With an optical zoom magnification of 10x, the DV52 also has a digital zoom, which works by electronically enhancing the optical image, and can magnify the picture up to 700 times. The digital image stabilization system keeps the picture steady and solid throughout zooms and camera shakes.

Digital Stills
The camcorder has a mode called progressive photo shoot, so that images captured will not have the jagged lines of interlaced video and instead come out clear and undistorted.

Inputs and Outputs
The DC252 comes with the standard DV IEEE 1394 port (also known as FireWire) for a super-fast, lossless connection to a PC or other DV machines. RCA connections are used for direct viewing on a television or VHS dubbing.

MiniDV Format
MiniDV digital technology delivers clear, sharp video with up to 500 lines of horizontal resolution–far superior to the 240 lines of resolution offered by 8mm camcorders. You’ll also get minimal color noise interference for a more stable picture.

Using Pulse Code Modulation (PCM) technology, Panasonic’s MiniDV camcorders provide pristine sound. Choose from 12-bit or 16-bit audio recording modes.

  • 16-bit audio includes a set of stereo audio tracks to produce CD-quality sound.
  • 12-bit audio utilizes two sets of audio tracks so you can easily add background music or commentary into your videos while maintaining the existing soundtrack.

This is all delivered on a cassette that’s 1/12th the size of a standard VHS tape. A MiniDV tape offers digital recording time of two full hours–20 times the capacity of a CD.

JVC GRDVL720U MiniDV Digital Camcorder with 3.5″ LCD and 8MB SD Memory Card

JVC GRDVL720U MiniDV Digital Camcorder with 3.5″ LCD and 8MB SD Memory Card

JVC GRDVL720U MiniDV Digital Camcorder with 3.5″ LCD and 8MB SD Memory Card Feature

  • MiniDV camcorder
  • 10x optical, 700x digital, zoom with image stabilization
  • 3.5-inch color LCD; black and white EVF
  • Digital still mode records onto included 8 MB MultiMediaCard
  • Integrated autolight; comes with remote control

JVC GRDVL720U MiniDV Digital Camcorder with 3.5″ LCD and 8MB SD Memory Card Overviews

The GR-DVL720U provides plenty of features for the video hobbyist, including a 10x optical zoom, digital image stabilization, and IEEE 1394 compatible outputs. Plus, you get a digital still mode that records 1,024 x 768 images onto an included 8 MB MultiMediaCard.

Lens
Breaking the mold that most other digital camcorders fall in, the GR-DVL720U has a very bright f1.8 lens, which should help with a dilemma common to many digital camcorders: poor low-light performance. While not useful at the highest levels, the optical zoom is augmented by a 700x digital zoom, which can supply that little bit extra you might need in some circumstances. Paired with the zoom is a digital image stabilizer, which will help eliminate much of the shakiness associated with high zoom levels.

Shooting Functions
The GR-DVL720U provides some camera functions, which can be quite useful if you spend the time to learn to use them. The camera gives you manual control over focus, exposure, and white balance, all of which affect the way your image is recorded. The manual focus and white-balance modes are perhaps the most exciting, as you can use them to create depth-of-field effects, and the white balance will allow you to light a room without investing in expensive lighting gear. In addition, JVC added in a number of digital wipes and fades, as well as a black fader.

Output Options
If you want to play your footage on television, the 720U provides two connection methods: S-video and standard RCA-style AV connectors. S-video provides the better video resolution, but you’ll still need to use the AV cable for audio, as S-video doesn’t carry an audio signal. If your object is to edit your movies on a computer, the camera also comes equipped with an IEEE 1394 compliant port for shuttling video back and forth. It’s a four-pin connector, and most computers with IEEE 1394 ports have six-pin connectors, so make sure you pick up the correct cable (JVC doesn’t provide one).

Digital Still Mode
Like many digital camcorders, the GR-DVL720U provides a digital still mode, and stores the resulting images onto an included 8 MB MultiMediaCard. You can also use SD cards. The images aren’t very high resolution and are generally good only for posting on the Web, or e-mailing to friends. To get the photos to your computer, the 720U utilizes a built-in USB port, and comes with the cable and software to accomplish the transfer.
